Nazca Nine est la nouvelle formation de Subsonic HeadDub, l'excellent groupe de dub anglais dont nous vous proposions plusieurs titres en mp3 il y a quelques semaines. Groupe de studio et de scène, Nazca Nine élargit son champ musical (tout en restant authentiquement dub) vers une sorte de Trance-World-Dub aux effets envoûtants. plusieurs de leurs albums sont disponibles sur mp3.com. * Est-ce que tu joues toujours avec Subsonic Headdub, ou plutôt avec Nazca Nine en ce moment ?

Pour l’instant, on joue avec Nazca Nine, même si on a un projet de collaboration live cette année avec Subsonic. Ce sera une soirée Megalithic Records, avec des artistes du label en mix ou en live, bien sûr agrémentée d’éclairages et de fumée. Les nouvelles compositions de Subsonic sortiront plus tard dans l’année, mais les anciens morceaux marchent toujours bien. Nous envisageons d’enregistrer bientôt une version studio de " Egypt ", une de nos chansons les plus populaires en concert, en espérant que Jeckyl, notre batteur sur scène, y apporte son style unique.

* Qui fait quoi, en studio et en concert ?

La formation live du moment se compose de Faroe à la basse, Astral Pedestrian aux claviers et sampler, Spitfire au chant et de Mighty Hotknife mixant le tout. On accueille également avec plaisir des invités sur scène, qui dernièrement furent le très talentueux Quentin de Celterabia (avec qui on prépare une collaboration live) et Mike, excellent percussonniste afro. On espère aussi que Frankie (alias Mambo Jambo) tapera quelques bœufs avec nous. Elle jouait de la flûte sur notre deuxième album et on l’adore tous. Une autre collaboration est prévue dans les mois à venir entre Nazca Nine et Trancevaal, un groupe africain issu des townships, qui dégage une bonne énergie. On n’est pas encore très sur de ce qui va arriver, mais on est très impatients :)
Dans le studio, j’arrive en général avec la bande et Spitfire écrit les textes, puis on enregistre la basse. Mais parfois, on joue simplement cinq ou six fois par dessus la bande en laissant le morceau se développer.

* Parles-nous de Hull, la ville, la scène musicale et de " Community of Sound ".

Hull a toujours été à la marge par rapport au reste du pays, et ceci à travers l’histoire, par ses mœurs, son architecture, sa musique. Pour la musique, le résultat est un large éventail d’artistes. Bien que ce soit une petite ville, l’attitude y est plutôt celle d’une capitale. Le prinipal problème est que, ces dernières années, les salles ont eu tendance à disparaître, sauf l’Adelphi qui a résisté, la scène musicale était donc sur le déclin. Récemment de nouveaux lieux ont ouvert, mais le public a perdu l’habitude d’aller voir des groupes originaux. Nous (Nazca Nine) en tant que groupe, on jouait devant un public très restreint la plupart du temps et on a réalisé que, soit on oublait Hull pour se concentrer sur le reste du monde, soit on devait essayer de faire quelque chose pour notre ville. C’est ainsi que " Community of Sound " est née :). Notre but est d’unir toute la communauté musicale, construire une scène, et faire écouter tout ce qu’on nous avons à offrir. Ca a l’air de plutôt bien marcher, et même si ce n’est que le début, on a un tas de projets excitants pour le futur. On organise régulièrement des concerts avec plusieurs artistes du site et on tourne toute la nuit en faisant alterner tout le monde, jusqu'à la fermeture.
Tous les artistes représentés sur notre site doivent soumettre deux morceaux qui sont également disponibles sur mp3.com. Au-delà de la musique, le site dispose également d’un agenda actualisé des concerts, d’une rubrique d’informations et de chroniques (celle-ci est toujours en construction). Il y a aussi une partie qui concerne d’avantage le business musical, l’idée étant d’y trouver tout type de renseignements sur Hull et ses artistes. Enfin, on trouve une liste de liens destinée à aider les musiciens, qui sera complétée en cours d’année par une rubrique leur offrant une aide légale.

* Quelques disques que tu conseillerais ?

Sur mp3.com, tous les morceaux de Fingertwister sont excellents. C’est ce que j’écoute en ce moment. J’aimerais bien aussi l’album de Legobeast, qui sortira bientôt sur Pork Recordings, un de nos talentueux ami, membre de Bullitnuts. Et un groupe de chez nous qui a assez bonne presse, Fonda 500, qui vient de sortir son premier album sur le label The Village.

* Tes projets ?

Pour l’instant tout tourne autour " Community of Sound ", mais on fait quelques concerts intéressants, notamment avec les Ozric Tentacles le 17 février au Wellington Club à Hull. C’est une chance incroyable pour moi (et le autres) car ce groupe à complètement changé ma vision de la musique il y a dix ans, et je n’ai pas varié depuis.
On prévoit de venir à Paris, ce qui sera sûrement arrangé d’ici l’été, et on prépare une tournée américaine pour l’automne. On ne vit que pour la scène et on est très impatient de tourner en Europe et ailleurs. On recherche un agent et un producteur qui pourrait nous permettre de faire tout ça, alors si vous en connaissez-un, contactez-nous :))

*. Do you still play with Subsonic Headdubs, or is it now the Nazca Nine time ?

We are gigging Nazca Nine at the moment, although later in the year we are planning to get a Subsonic HeadDub live set together to take on tour. This will be a Megalithic Records night, featuring a mixture of dj'ing and live Dubs from all of the Megalithic artists, and of course smoke and psychedelic lightshow!! New Subsonic HeadDub material will be appearing sometime later in the year, and there are still a few old archives kicking around. I am hoping that at some point we can do a studio recording of Egypt, the live version being one of our most popular tracks, and I would like to get Jeckyl the drummer who played live back in to add his unique brand of drumming to the track.

*. Who does what (live/studio) ?

The live setup at the moment is Faroe on Bass, Astral Pedestrian on Keyboards\sampler, Spitfire on Vocals, and the mighty Hotknife Dubbing the lot. We are also open to guests playing with us, which of late has been the magnificent multi-talented Quentin from Celterabia (we are also planning a collaberation which will develop in a live environment), and Mike on Percussion who is an excellent African style drummer, who is planning to play with us again. We are also hoping that Fankie (Mambo Jambo) will be doing a couple of gigs with us. She played the flute on our second album, and we are all huge fans of her and Mambo Jambo! Another collaberation which is happening over the next few months is between Nazca Nine and Trancevaal which are a local African Township band spreading a vibe of happiness! We're not sure what will happen but we're looking forward to it immensely :)
In a studio situation, what tends to happen is that I come up with the backing, and then Spitfire comes down and puts some words down, followed by bass, though sometimes we just jam to the backing for 5 or 6 gigs and let the track develop before recording.

*. Tell us about Hull - the city - the music scene - the Community of Sound ?

Hull is a city which has always been disconnected from the rest of the country, and this has always been reflected throughout history in it's architecture, lifestyle and music. The result for music is that we have a very wide ranging scope of musical talent. Although it is a city, it is really a big town in attitude. The main problem has been over the last few years, many of the live venues disapeared leaving only the struggling Adelphi, and so the live music scene took a plunge. Recently there are a few more live venues which have opened up, but audiences are a big problem, people have got out of the habit of going to see original bands. We as a band (Nazca Nine) were playing to very small audiences most of the time and we realised that we could either forget Hull and concentrate on the rest of the world, or try to do something about it, and so Community of Sound was born :) Our aim is to unite the musical community, build up the scene, and showcase all we have to offer to the rest of the world. It seems to be working, although we are at an early stage there are lots of exciting developments on the cards. One thing we do is to hold regular showcase events which feature artists from the site, and the nights work on a rotational basis ie: 1st Band plays 2 tracks, 2nd Band plays 2 tracks then we DJ 3 tracks from artists who aren't playing, and then 3rd Band etc... the whole thing rotates until the venue closes. We have held two so far and it makes an excellent night of free entertainment, the next one is on the 8th March. Every artist on the site gets to submit 2 tracks which are also uploaded to mp3.com. Beyond the music the site also has an up to date gig guide, news section and reviews (although this part of the site is still under development). Also categories for every business which has something to do with music, the idea being that anything you want to know about Hull and Music you will find here. There is also a list of links to resources to help musicians, and over the year we will be adding sections to offer legal help and 'how to' guides, which will be helpful to every musician in the world!

*. A few records you would like everybody to listen...

The Fingertwister at www.mp3.com/thefingertwister all of his tracks are excellent. This is what I am listening to at the moment! I'd also like to plug the soon to be released Legobeast album out on Pork Recordings, a very talented friend of ours, who is also half of Bullitnuts. Finally a local band which are getting good press over here at the moment Fonda 500, who have just released their debut album on 'The Village' label

*. Your projects ? gigs ?

Well for the immediate future everything is going into Community of Sound, but we are playing some exciting gigs, firstly supporting The Ozric Tentacles on 17th February at The Wellington Club, Hull. This is an unbelievable opportunity for me (and the rest of the band) as they (The Ozrics) drastically changed my attitude and outlook towards music a decade ago and I haven't looked back since :) We are planning to visit Paris, which is in the process of being arranged in Spring\Summer, and we are putting together an American tour for the Autumn.
We live to play live and are eager to tour in Europe and the rest of the world, and we are on the lookout for agents\promoters who can make this happen, please let us know if you know of any :))
